What is Taxi Insurance?
Motor insurance is required by law if you intend to use or leave your vehicle on a public highway. Taxi insurance is required if you intend to carry passengers for hire and reward.
What types of taxi insurance are there?
Taxi Insurance includes minicab insurance, private hire insurance, public hire insurance, black cab insurance, minibus insurance and taxi fleet insurance. Your vehicle must be licensed by the appropriate taxi licensed authority in your area.

What is the difference between private hire taxi insurance and public hire taxi insurance?
There are two types of UK Taxi Insurance:
- Public Hire Insurance – this vehicle is allowed to do an immediate pick up from the street. The best known example of this is the black cab in London
- Private Hire Insurance – private hire taxi’s (or minicabs) are arranged appointments from a selected pick up point. Private hire taxi’s can be sole traders or working from a taxi office
How many drivers can I have on my taxi insurance policy?
The majority of taxi insurance policies are either Insured Only or Named Drivers as the taxi insurance costs increase as driver numbers increase. But you can have Any Driver policies if you wish.
There are several driving restrictions available to include Insured Only, Named drivers and then Any Driver over a requested age. Your taxi insurance quote will depend on how many drivers you have, what age they are and what no claims history they have.
What types of vehicle can I use as a Taxi?
- Saloon and estate cars are most common as these allow for a minimum of 4 passengers and gives good luggage space
- Most taxi drivers choose diesel cars for economy and engine life
- Minibuses and Multi Purpose Vehicles (MPV’s) are required for larger parties of passengers. Cheap taxi insurance is also available on these vehicles

When will I get my insurance documents?
You will get your taxi insurance documents within 5 working days. We will issue an immediate cover note if necessary. Your taxi insurance renewal documents will be sent to you automatically.

Is there an excess on my Taxi Insurance?
The choice is yours. Your online taxi car insurance quote will ask what excess you are looking for. Of course, if you get a phone quote then our account handlers will advise this.
There is the option to delete the policy excess from all our motor taxi insurance quotes at a small additional cost. However, most taxi drivers choose to have an excess as it keeps the premium lower
